Step One:

Write a resume AND fill out a job application

Make sure you have all types of contact information for the employer, do not utilize one contact route. Make sure you submit a application in ALL forms: Fax, Email, online application, courier etc. Don’t worry if you submit one too many applications or resumes. The employer usually is impressed with your perseverance, remember they get hundreds of applications a day – make sure your resume is remembered.

Step Two:

Write a KILLER ( For legal purposes: when I say killer I mean outstanding ) cover letter.

Make sure your cover letter directly indicates the employers name and company. Don’t make it seem like you just have one resume you have photocopied and distributed it to hundreds. If theemployer knows you have taken extra effort they are more likely to check out your application. Your greeting line should never be addressed DEAR SIR OR MADAM or TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: If you are unaware, call the company before hand and ask who the Manager in charge of hiring is Make sure you get the CORRECT SPELLING of their name. Trust me, this one minute to make a phone call is the difference between getting a job and not getting one.

Step Three:

Organize yourself.

Now that you have made a general template of a killer cover letter and resume. Make sure your resume is 2 FULL PAGES IN LENGTH no more no less if you do not have enough experience to fill 2 pages elaborate on other aspects such as skills or job description. Your resume should indicate that your references are available upon request. Find at least 3 references make sure one is a personal character reference and tell them before hand that you are applying for a job. That way they can Make sure your name and address is on both pages of the resume and put a footer at the bottom stating (page 1 of 2 and page 2 of 2) this way in case your resume gets misfiled it can easily be found.

DESCRIBE HOW YOU WILL BENEFIT THE COMPANY- DO NOT LIST THINGS IN YOUR RESUME. In addition, I am ______________, and would appreciate the opportunity to contribute my ______________. Aside from the skills listed above I also ______________ (List more skills here) I can promise that meeting with me will not be a waste of your time-and I will make myself available at your convenience, during or outside of normal business hours. Please do not hesitate to contact me at ______________ (cell) or (xxx) ______________ at any time.

Step Four:

Check out newspaper classifieds, online advertisements, government job banks. Email friends and family and let them know you are searching for a job. The larger your network the more people can help you out. If you apply in person make sure you are clean and well dressed.
